Celebrating the Arts and Cultures of the New California

People have come to Central California from all over the world seeking new opportunities and a new life. The university seeks to establish two major efforts to study the cultural issues of the region and to identify opportunities for greater cultural understanding. To that end, the campaign will seek funding for the Central Valley Cultural Heritage Institute. The institute will work to document and record cultural histories that are in danger of being lost, especially among Native Americans, the descendents of the Californios, African Americans, and the Hmong.

Fresno State will build on its success as the host of the California State University system’s Summer Arts program. Summer Arts brings top representatives of California’s entertainment industry to inspire a new generation of artists, musicians and designers.

The music center will be the only one of its kind on the West Coast; the only similar centers exist at the University of Florida and the University of Texas at Austin. The center’s mission will be to enhance and promote cultural understanding through the composition, performance and study of music.
