Bruce Roberts' role as the J.G. Boswell Chair of Agronomy at Fresno State ensures a busy schedule of teaching, research and other responsibilities to benefit agriculture in Central California.
Agronomy is the management of crops and soils. In 2004, Roberts brought more than two decades of expertise to the Department of Plant Science when he was named to the J.G. Boswell post, one of numerous endowed chairs at Fresno State established through gifts from private sources. The endowment allows Roberts time to conduct research in food production and soil management. It's work that could help agriculture -- the prime industry in the Central Valley -- deal with future challenges.
"The goal is to be able to provide a technical service through applied research and also to be a liaison for the department and the agricultural industry in Central California," says Roberts, who is a Fresno State alumni.
And, of course, Roberts shares his knowledge with his students: "It's very rewarding having an impact on future generations."
