The time for Fresno State to build private support for its academic programs is now. Thus, the campus community is preparing for its first major comprehensive fund-raising campaign.
Conducting a major campaign requires the investment of additional funds. That is, it costs money to raise money, and it costs more to raise more. The goal of this sort of campaign is at least to double the annual fund-raising totals and to double the university's endowed funds. Building private support now will greatly enhance the future of the university.
University Advancement, including Development, uses a small proportion of the campus' state funding allocation. The additional costs of this campus wide effort will be covered by a series of funding methods involving gift-related revenues, which is an appropriate source of support for expanding and strengthening fund-raising services. These resources will enable Fresno State to invest in staff and programs that will build private support for the future.
Throughout the U.S., public universities and their institutionally related foundations are using such gift-related revenue to fund development programs. Some institutions have had such a system in place for two decades or more. Faculty, university administrators and foundation board members developed Fresno State's campaign funding structure collaboratively, a structure that includes the following key points:
The foundation has authorized a 1/2 percent increase in the administrative management fee for endowment funds. This small increase will generate funds to pay a significant portion of the campaign's cost.
The university has established a 5 percent assessment on new cash gifts, which, again is a significant source of support for the campaign to benefit the entire university.
The Campaign Investment Fund has been established to hold unexpended current gift dollars until they are called on for expenditure. Earnings on the CIF will support the campaign. The foundation has also authorized a line of credit to support the early stages of the campaign, as needed, to be paid back out of fees as the campaign proceeds.
The campaign will be a collaborative effort by the entire university community - faculty, alumni, students, friends, corporations, foundations, other organizations. Increased investment in development will enhance resources for each college's projects, raise the bar on academic fund raising, and make Fresno State truly the University for the New California.
